Last week completely and 100% sucked. Yes, pardon my slang, but sucked.
If you have ever had to sit on pins and needles waiting for test results, hoping and praying they give you the answer you want, then you know what I mean.
(If you haven’t, chances are, one day, you will as, well, life happens to all of us…)
I won’t disclose the name, out of privacy for this person, but all I can say is my family experienced a bit of a health scare last week…
While we’re not completely out of the woods yet, we seemingly have dodged a major bullet (thank you, G-d, for hearing my prayers!)…
And, not to be dramatic about it, but there really is no greater wake-up call than a potentially significant health scare.
If you’re just ‘going through’ life, consider this your wake-up call…
I was so preoccupied last week that I really hadn’t had a chance to think about what I wanted to write about today, when I realized the topic was right in front of me.
I want to share with you some of the lessons I learned last week that I hope will help you as you go through life − and give you a wake-up call (like I got) if needed.
Some of them you may have heard before, some may be new. I don’t know.
All I do know is that it never hurts to hear them again and again…because I can tell you firsthand, it’s one thing to hear them and kinda let them go in one ear and out the other.
It’s another to have lived them.
And I’ve lived them now.
So, here they are, in no particular order….
:| Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Yes, I know we’ve all heard this one a million times before. Richard Carlson even wrote a book about it. But, take it from me, it takes less than a nanosecond (even less than that) for all of those little things we worry about to completely disappear when faced with the possibility of something happening to a loved one. Really. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Not at work, in relationships, or in life. None of it matters.
:| Don’t wait for life to be perfect to live it.
I’ve been taking a little break from the dating scene, telling friends I’d go back on match (or another online dating site) when I felt like this area of my life or that area of my life felt a bit more settled. But, last week made me realize how foolish I was to assume I’d always have the time. So, I’m not waiting anymore for my life to be perfect to find the perfect guy for me. I’m going back online. Imperfections and all.
Is there something you’re putting off because you feel as though the time isn’t right, your life isn’t perfect enough? Don’t wait for life to be perfect to live it. Live it now.

:| Make the effort now − not later.
Don’t wait for a wake-up call to tell the people in your life that you love them. Make the effort now. Not later. Now. And not just with your words, but with your actions. Don’t take it for granted that you’ll always have the time. Life can change in an instant, and you don’t want to look back and remember all of the excuses you made instead of the actions you took to make sure people knew you loved and cared about them. (This is one area where I have no regrets – the people I love know I love them…although I will be giving out more hugs from now on!)
The trouble is, you think you have time. ~ Buddha
:| Ask for help when you need it.
One of the first things I did last week was line up my “army of supporters”, i.e., my 4-in-the-morning friends, and not only share my worries with them, but also confirm that I’d have their support going forward should this health scare turn into something worse. Knowing I had them by my side made all the difference. There’s no shame in asking for help when you need it, whether it’s from friends or someone else. If you need help in life, get it. Period.
